The Soldier in the Field – Barnett Statue
The newest addition to the Downing House Museum Complex is “The Soldier in the Field” statue, also known as the Barnett Statue. The Leland and Ruth Cantril Family donated the statue to the Scotland County Historical Society with the stipulation that it be moved to the Museum Complex. A number of interested parties met and discussed plans to relocate and restore the historic World War I monument. The monument stands upon a four-sided dais and there are inscriptions on each of the four sides. The front faces west and has information about Purnell Batts Barnett and the east side has the names of his comrades who also died in World War I. The north side has words about Purnell’s Father and the south side seems to be in his Mother’s words.
